Bulldogs come in a few varieties. The English and the French Bulldog are part of the Non-sporting group of breeds. They are bred mainly as pets and do well in a show ring. The American Bulldog is characterized by hardiness and willingness to work. It is used as an obedience competitor, a guardian, and is likely to make an excellent military service dog.

Bulldogs - History

Over the course of time all the three breeds underwent certain changes. The English Bulldog that can be considered the ancestor of other varieties appeared in the 1200's. Its original function was bullbaiting. Many people found a great pleasure in watching these courageous dogs in fight. After the sport had been outlawed, a particular effort was taken to eliminate cruelty in the dog.

Smaller versions of the English Bulldog were brought to France, where lace workers and dog lovers developed a new breed with "bat" ears and friendly personality, serving primarily as lap dogs. One of the most prominent features of the breed is its flat skull. Since the French did much work in developing the dog, it was called the French Bulldog.

The American Bulldog was subject to perfection mostly in the US. Allen Scott and John D. Johnson are reputed as American Bulldog enthusiasts who helped to produce the new breed. They did their best to produce strong Bulldogs that could be of use when dealing with livestock. Later, some crossings with fighting dogs of Mastiff and Bull type were held to perfect the breed. As the result, we have a well-balanced dog, a worthy member in the family of Bulldogs.
